What is printable Sudoku?

Printable Sudoku is the classic 9x9 number puzzle arranged for paper. Fill every row, column and 3x3 box with the digits 1 to 9 without repeating a digit in any of those areas.

The rules are simple, but the solving path can range from quick scanning to careful pencil-mark logic. That makes Sudoku especially good for printable puzzle sheets: you can pause, annotate, erase and return later.

How to solve printable Sudoku step by step

Because a printed grid lets you annotate freely, paper is a great place to learn real Sudoku technique. Start by scanning: pick a digit, say 1, and look across every row, column and 3x3 box where a 1 already appears. Cross-hatching from those givens often pins the 1 into a single empty cell in a nearby box, a placement you can ink in straight away.

When scanning stops producing placements, switch to pencil marks. In the corner of each empty cell, lightly note every digit still allowed there. A cell left with only one candidate is a naked single; a digit that can go in only one cell of a row, column or box is a hidden single. Each time you fill a cell, erase that digit from the candidates of every cell that shares its row, column or box.

  • Cross-hatch one digit at a time to find the easy placements first.
  • Pencil small candidate notes in the corners of empty cells on harder grids.
  • Look for naked singles (one candidate left) and hidden singles.
  • Use naked pairs: two cells in a unit sharing the same two candidates remove those digits elsewhere in that unit.
  • Watch for pointing pairs, where a box confines a digit to one row or column.

Which Sudoku difficulty should you print?

Start with easy Sudoku if you are learning the rules, introducing someone to the puzzle, or want a quick sheet for a short break. Medium Sudoku is the best everyday level for many solvers because it still moves steadily while asking for more attention.

Hard and expert Sudoku PDFs are better when you want a longer challenge. They usually reward candidate notes, hidden singles, pairs, box-line interactions and patient elimination.

  • Easy: best for beginners, children, warm-ups and relaxed solving.
  • Medium: best for daily practice and printable puzzle packs.
  • Hard: best for experienced solvers who use pencil marks.
  • Expert: best for slow, focused sessions with more advanced deduction.

Printing tips

Print only the puzzle pages first if you want to avoid seeing the answers. The solution pages come after the puzzle pages and use smaller grids so they are easy to keep separate.

A pencil is usually better than a pen, especially for hard and expert Sudoku. Light candidate notes in the corners of empty cells can make longer puzzles much easier to manage.

  • Use black-and-white printing if you prefer a simple paper sheet.
  • Print double-sided only if you are comfortable keeping answers at the back.
  • Keep the PDF file saved so you can reprint clean copies later.

Answers are included

Every printable Sudoku PDF includes a matching answer section. Puzzle numbers and solution numbers match, so puzzle 24 is checked against solution 24.

The PDF pages use numbers rather than English labels inside the document, which keeps the files useful across the English, French, Spanish and German pages.

Do I need pencil marks for easy Sudoku?

Usually not. Easy and most medium sheets can be solved by cross-hatching and spotting singles. Save full candidate notes for the hard and expert PDFs.

What is the single rule behind every Sudoku?

No digit may repeat within a single row, column or 3x3 box. Every deduction, however advanced, ultimately comes back to that one constraint.
