What is printable Kakuro?

Kakuro is a number puzzle built from crossing sums. Each white run must add up to the clue beside it, and digits cannot repeat within the same run.

Printable Kakuro works especially well on paper because you can jot possible combinations next to clues, narrow the options, and use crossings to force exact digits.

Kakuro combinations worth memorising

Kakuro rewards knowing which digit sets a clue forces. No digit repeats inside a single run, so when a run's length and total allow only one combination, you can pencil those digits into every cell of the run at once. These unique sums are the backbone of fast Kakuro solving, and a printed grid is the perfect place to jot the options beside each clue.

The most useful combinations sit at the extremes. A two-cell run totalling 3 must be 1 and 2; totalling 4 must be 1 and 3; totalling 16 must be 7 and 9; totalling 17 must be 8 and 9. A three-cell run of 6 is 1-2-3 and of 24 is 7-8-9. Where a horizontal run crosses a vertical one, that shared cell must satisfy both clues, so compare their combinations and keep only the digit they have in common.

• Two cells: 3 = {1,2}, 4 = {1,3}, 16 = {7,9}, 17 = {8,9}.
• Three cells: 6 = {1,2,3}, 7 = {1,2,4}, 23 = {6,8,9}, 24 = {7,8,9}.
• No digit repeats within the same run.
• At a crossing, keep only the digits common to both runs' options.
• Pencil the full combination beside short, tightly constrained runs first.

How to choose a Kakuro PDF

If you are new to Kakuro, start with 5x5 easy. The smaller grid keeps each sum manageable while you learn common combinations such as 3 in two cells or 24 in three cells.

The 7x7 PDFs are a strong everyday choice. They have enough space for interesting logic without becoming too long. The 9x9 PDFs are best for solvers who want a larger printable challenge.

Kakuro solving tips

The fastest way to improve at Kakuro is to learn the most restricted sums. Some totals have only one possible set of digits, and those clues often unlock the rest of the grid.

Use pencil marks lightly. Write possible digits for a run, then remove candidates when a crossing clue proves that a digit cannot fit.

• Digits 1 to 9 are used, with no repeated digit in a single run.
• Look for very small and very large sums first.
• Use crossings to compare across and down possibilities.
